           Itcamedown,notasrain,butasthewatersofavastcataract,asthoughamountainlake,byanearthquakeshock,hadbeenprecipitatedinabodyuponavalley.Onlyoneedgeofitreachedtheland,andheretheseethingfloodtoreawayearth,trees,androcks,leavingbehinditgreatchasmsandgulliesasitdescendedtothesea.Thebayitself,intowhichthevastbodyofthewaterfell,becameasceneofsurgingmadness.Thetoweringwallsofwaterwhichhadstoodupallaroundthesuddenlycreatedaperturehurledthemselvesbackintotheabyss,anddownintothegreatchasmatthebottomofthebay,whichhadbeenmadewhenthemotorsentitsshockalongthegreatrockbeds.Downupon,andinto,thisroaring,boilingtumultfellthetremendouscataractfromabove,andtheharbourbecameonewildexpanseofleapingmaddenedwaves,hissingtheirwhirlingsprayhighintotheair.Duringthesefewterrificmomentsotherthingshappenedwhichpassedunnoticedinthegeneralconsternation.Allalongtheshoresofthebayandinfrontofthecitythewatersseemedtobesuckedaway,slowlyreturningastheseaforcedthemtotheirlevel,andatmanypointsupanddowntheharbourthereweresubmarinedetonationsandupheavalsofthewater.Thesewerecausedbytheexplosion,byconcussion,ofeverytorpedoandsubmarinebatteryintheharbour;anditwaswiththisobjectinviewthattheinstantaneousmotor-bombhadbeenshotintothemouthofthebay.Theeffectsofthedischargeofthemotor-bombastonishedandevenstartledthoseonboardtherepellersandthecrabs.
