           Inconsequenceofthisviewofthestateofaffairs,ananswerwassenttotheSyndicate’snote,askingthatfurthertimebegivenfortheconsiderationofthesituation,andsuggestingthatanexhibitionofthepowerofthemotor-bombwasnotnecessary,assufficientproofofthishadbeengiveninthedestructionoftheCanadianforts,theannihilationoftheCraglevin,andtheextraordinaryresultsofthedischargeofsaidbombsontheprecedingday.TothisareplywassentfromtheofficeoftheSyndicateinNewYork,bymeansofacableboatfromtheFrenchcoast,thatonnoaccountcouldtheirpurposebealteredortheirpropositionsmodified.AlthoughtheBritishGovernmentmightbeconvincedofthepoweroftheSyndicate’smotor-bombs,itwasnotthecasewiththeBritishpeople,foritwasyetpopularlydisbelievedthatmotor-bombsexisted.ThisdisbelieftheSyndicatewasdeterminedtoovercome,notonlyforthefurtheranceofitsownpurposes,buttopreventthedownfallofthepresentBritishMinistry,andaprobableradicalchangeintheGovernment.Thatsuchapoliticalrevolution,asundesirabletotheSyndicateastocool-headedandsensibleEnglishmen,wasimminent,therecouldbenodoubt.Thegrowingfeelingofdisaffection,almostamountingtodisloyalty,notonlyintheoppositionparty,butamongthosewhohadhithertobeenfirmadherentsoftheGovernment,wasmainlybasedupontheideathatthepresentBritishrulershadallowedthemselvestobefrightenedbyminesandtorpedoes,artfullyplacedandexploded.ThereforetheSyndicateintendedtosetrightthepublicminduponthissubject.
