           Slowlyturningherbowfromsidetoside,sothatthegunswouldcoverarangeofnearlyhalfacircle,theinstantaneousmotor-bombsoftherepellerweredischarged,oneeveryhalfminute.Oneofthemostappallingcharacteristicsofthemotor-bombswasthesilencewhichaccompaniedtheirdischargeandaction.Nonoisewasheard,excepttheflashofsoundoccasionedbytheremovaloftheparticlesoftheobjectaimedat,andthesubsequentroarofwindorfallofwater.Aseachmotor-bombdroppedintothechannel,adensecloudappearedhighintheair,abovearoaring,seethingcauldron,hollowedoutofthewatersandoutoftheverybottomofthechannel.Intothischasmthecloudquicklycamedown,condensedintoavastbodyofwater,whichfell,withtheroarofacyclone,intothedreadfulabyssfromwhichithadbeentorn,beforethehissingwallsofthegreathollowhadhalffilleditwiththeirsweepingsurges.Thepiled-upmassoftheredundantwaterwasstillsendingitsmaddenedbillowstossingandwrithingineverydirectiontowardtheirnormallevel,whenanotherbombwasdischarged;anothersurgingabyssappeared,anotherroarofwindandwaterwasheard,andanothermountainoffuriousbillowsuplifteditselfinastormofsprayandfoam,ragingthatithadfounditsplaceusurped.Slowlyturning,therepellerdischargedbombafterbomb,buildingupoutoftheveryseaitselfabarrieragainstitsenemies.
