           Theirarmswerenotsolongasourseither,andIdidnotnoticethattheyeverbalancedthemselveswhentheywalked,bytouchingthegroundoneithersidewiththeirhands.Also,theirmusclesweremoreroundedandsymmetricalthanours,andtheirfacesweremorepleasing.Theirnoseorificesopeneddownward;likewisethebridgesoftheirnosesweremoredeveloped,didnotlooksosquatnorcrushedasours.Theirlipswerelessflabbyandpendent,andtheireye-teethdidnotlooksomuchlikefangs.However,theywerequiteasthin-hippedaswe,anddidnotweighmuchmore.Takeitallinall,theywerelessdifferentfromusthanwerewefromtheTreePeople.Certainly,allthreekindswererelated,andnotsoremotelyrelatedatthat.

           Thefirearoundwhichtheysatwasespeciallyattractive.Lop-EarandIsatforhours,watchingtheflamesandsmoke.Itwasmostfascinatingwhenfreshfuelwasthrownonandshowersofsparkswentflyingupward.Iwantedtocomecloserandlookatthefire,buttherewasnoway.Wewerecrouchingintheforksofatreeontheedgeoftheopenspace,andwedidnotdareruntheriskofbeingdiscovered.

           TheFire-Mensquattedaroundthefireandsleptwiththeirheadsbowedforwardontheirknees.Theydidnotsleepsoundly.Theirearstwitchedintheirsleep,andtheywererestless.Everylittlewhileoneoranothergotupandthrewmorewooduponthefire.Aboutthecircleoflightintheforest,inthedarknessbeyond,roamedhuntinganimals.Lop-EarandIcouldtellthembytheirsounds.
