Someaccidenthadinjuredthemusclesanddeprivedhimoftheuseofit.
Heclosedwithme,andwewentatitforalltheworldlikeacoupleofsmallboysfighting.Wescratchedandbit,pulledhair,clinched,andthreweachotherdown.IrememberIsucceededingettingonhimwhatinmycollegedaysIlearnedwascalledahalf-Nelson.Thisholdgavemethedecidedadvantage.ButIdidnotenjoyitlong.Hetwisteduponeleg,andwiththefoot(orhind-hand)madesosavageanonslaughtuponmyabdomenastothreatentodisembowelme.Ihadtoreleasehiminordertosavemyself,andthenwewentatitagain.
Lop-EarwasayearolderthanI,butIwasseveraltimesangrierthanhe,andintheendhetooktohisheels.Ichasedhimacrosstheopenanddownarun-waytotheriver.Buthewasbetteracquaintedwiththelocalityandranalongtheedgeofthewaterandupanotherrun-way.Hecutdiagonallyacrosstheopenspaceanddashedintoawide-mouthedcave.
