           “Well,IknowthatIdidn’ttellyouanysuchthingasthat,”saidCarrie,recoveringherself.

           “IfIwereyou,”wentonDrouet,ignoringherlastremark,“Iwouldn’thaveanythingtodowithhim.He’samarriedman,youknow.”

           “Who—whois?”saidCarrie,stumblingattheword.

           “Why,Hurstwood,”saidDrouet,notingtheeffectandfeelingthathewasdeliveringatellingblow.

           “Hurstwood!”exclaimedCarrie,rising.Herfacehadchangedseveralshadessincethisannouncementwasmade.Shelookedwithinandwithoutherselfinahalf-dazedway.

           “Whotoldyouthis?”sheasked,forgettingthatherinterestwasoutoforderandexceedinglyincriminating.

           “Why,Iknowit.I’vealwaysknownit,”saidDrouet.

           Carriewasfeelingaboutforarightthought.Shewasmakingamostmiserableshowing,andyetfeelingsweregeneratingwithinherwhichwereanythingbutcrumblingcowardice.

           “IthoughtItoldyou,”headded.

           “No,youdidn’t,”shecontradicted,suddenlyrecoveringhervoice.“Youdidn’tdoanythingofthekind.”

           Drouetlistenedtoherinastonishment.Thiswassomethingnew.

           “IthoughtIdid,”hesaid.

           Carrielookedaroundherverysolemnly,andthenwentovertothewindow.

           “Yououghtn’ttohavehadanythingtodowithhim,”saidDrouetinaninjuredtone,“afterallI’vedoneforyou.”

           “You,”saidCarrie,“you!Whathaveyoudoneforme?”

           Herlittlebrainhadbeensurgingwithcontradictoryfeelings—shameatexposure,shameatHurstwood’sperfidy,angeratDrouet’sdeception,themockeryhehadmadeather.
