           “Supposewedidn’thavetimetogetmarriedhere?”headded,anafterthoughtstrikinghim.

           “Ifwegotmarriedassoonaswegottotheotherendofthejourneyitwouldbeallright.”

           “Imeantthat,”hesaid.

           “Yes.”

           Themorningseemedpeculiarlybrighttohimnow.Hewonderedwhatevercouldhaveputsuchathoughtintohishead.Impossibleasitwas,hecouldnothelpsmilingatitscleverness.Itshowedhowshelovedhim.Therewasnodoubtinhismindnow,andhewouldfindawaytowinher.

           “Well,”hesaid,jokingly,“I’llcomeandgetyouoneoftheseevenings,”andthenhelaughed.

           “Iwouldn’tstaywithyou,though,ifyoudidn’tmarryme,”Carrieaddedreflectively.

           “Idon’twantyouto,”hesaidtenderly,takingherhand.

           Shewasextremelyhappynowthatsheunderstood.Shelovedhimthemoreforthinkingthathewouldrescueherso.Asforhim,themarriageclausedidnotdwellinhismind.Hewasthinkingthatwithsuchaffectiontherecouldbenobartohiseventualhappiness.

           “Let’sstrollabout,”hesaidgayly,risingandsurveyingallthelovelypark.

           “Allright,”saidCarrie.

           TheypassedtheyoungIrishman,wholookedafterthemwithenviouseyes.

           “’Tisafoinecouple,”heobservedtohimself.“Theymustberich.”
