           “DidGeorgegetoff?”askedJessicaofhermotheranotherday,thusrevealingsomethingthatHurstwoodhadheardnothingabout.

           “Wherehashegone?”heasked,lookingup.Hehadneverbeforebeenkeptinignoranceconcerningdepartures.

           “HewasgoingtoWheaton,”saidJessica,notnoticingtheslightputuponherfather.

           “What’soutthere?”heasked,secretlyirritatedandchagrinedtothinkthatheshouldbemadetopumpforinformationinthismanner.

           “Atennismatch,”saidJessica.

           “Hedidn’tsayanythingtome,”Hurstwoodconcluded,findingitdifficulttorefrainfromabittertone.

           “Iguesshemusthaveforgotten,”exclaimedhiswifeblandly.Inthepasthehadalwayscommandedacertainamountofrespect,whichwasacompoundofappreciationandawe.Thefamiliaritywhichinpartstillexistedbetweenhimselfandhisdaughterhehadcourted.Asitwas,itdidnotgobeyondthelightassumptionofwords.Thetonewasalwaysmodest.Whateverhadbeen,however,hadlackedaffection,andnowhesawthathewaslosingtrackoftheirdoings.Hisknowledgewasnolongerintimate.Hesometimessawthemattable,andsometimesdidnot.Heheardoftheirdoingsoccasionally,moreoftennot.Somedayshefoundthathewasallatseaastowhattheyweretalkingabout—thingstheyhadarrangedtodoorthattheyhaddoneinhisabsence.Moreaffectingwasthefeelingthattherewerelittlethingsgoingonofwhichhenolongerheard.Jessicawasbeginningtofeelthatheraffairswereherown.George,Jr.,flourishedaboutasifhewereamanentirelyandmustneedshaveprivatematters.
