           TheoldillusionthatherewassomeonewhoneededheraidbegantogrowinCarrie’smind.Shetrulypitiedthissad,lonelyfigure.Tothinkthatallhisfinestateshouldbesobarrenforwantofher;thatheneededtomakesuchanappealwhensheherselfwaslonelyandwithoutanchor.Surely,thiswastoobad.

           “Iamnotverybad,”hesaid,apologetically,asifheowedittohertoexplainonthisscore.“Youthink,probably,thatIroamaround,andgetintoallsortsofevil?Ihavebeenratherreckless,butIcouldeasilycomeoutofthat.Ineedyoutodrawmeback,ifmylifeeveramountstoanything.”

           Carrielookedathimwiththetendernesswhichvirtueeverfeelsinitshopeofreclaimingvice.Howcouldsuchamanneedreclaiming?Hiserrors,whatwerethey,thatshecouldcorrect?Smalltheymustbe,whereallwassofine.Atworst,theyweregildedaffairs,andwithwhatleniencyaregildederrorsviewed.Heputhimselfinsuchalonelylightthatshewasdeeplymoved.
