Rita’stownwasoneofmanyattemptingtoprovidetheproduceandlivestockneededbyahungrynationanditsarmy.
ThefirstvictimsoftheMimicattackswerealsothemostvulnerable:thepoorestregionsofAfricaandSouthAmerica.ThearchipelagosofSoutheastAsia.Countriesthatlackedthemeanstodefendthemselveswatchedastheencroachingdesertdevouredtheirland.Peopleabandonedthecultivationofcashcrops-thecoffee,tea,tobacco,andspicescovetedinwealthiernations-andbegangrowingstaples,beansandsorghum,anythingtostaveoffstarvation.DevelopednationshadgenerallybeenabletostoptheMimicadvanceatthecoastline,butmuchoftheproducetheyhadtakenforgranteddisappearedfrommarketsandstoreshelvesovernight.
Rita’sfather,whohadgrownupinaworldwhereevenMidwesternerscouldhavefreshsushieveryday,was,itisnoexaggerationtosay,acoffeeaddict.Hedidn’tsmokeordrink-coffeewashisvice.OftenhewouldtakeRitabythehandandsneakoffwithhertotheoldman’sstorewhenRita’smotherwasn’twatching.
