Alongtimeago,inabeautifulworldunderthesea,therelivedmerpeople.Merpeoplewerestrangemagicalcreatureswithbodieslikeyouandmebutlongfish’stailsinsteadoflegs.

Althoughmerpeoplewerehappyintheirunder-seakingdom,sometimes,justforfun,theywouldswimuptothesurfaceandtakealookatourworld.

Sometimestheywouldseehumanbeingssailpastontheirgreatshipsandsay,’Whatstrangelivesthosehumanslead!’

Thekingofthemerpeoplehadsixmermaiddaughters.Allwereverybeautiful,buttheloveliestwastheyoungest.Notonlywasshebeautiful,buttheLittleMermaidhadthebestsingingvoiceofallthemerpeople.WhentheLittleMermaidsang,everyonewouldstopwhattheyweredoingandlisten.Eventhefishesseemedtoswimmoreslowlyasiftheytoowereenjoyinghersinging.

Mermaidswerenotallowedtogouptothesurfacetoseetheworldofhumanbeingsuntiltheywerefifteenyearsold,andeachsisteronherfifteenthbirthdayswamuptoseeourworldforherself.Whentheycamebacktheytoldofhugeshipsplungingthroughgreatstorms,ofchildrenplayinghappilyonsandybeaches,ofwhitecreaturesthatseemedtofloatgracefullythroughtheair,andofstrangesadmusicthatfloatedfromthetowersoftallbuildings.

Eachtimeoneofhersisterswenttothesurface,theLittleMermaidwouldpleadwithherfathertobeallowedtogowithher.

’Bepatient,littleone,’herfatherwouldsay.’Yourturnwillcome.
