Afour-wheelerwasatthedoorateleven,andinitwedrovetoaspotattheothersideofHammersmithBridge.Herethecabmanwasdirectedtowait.Ashortwalkbroughtustoasecludedroadfringedwithpleasanthouses,eachstandinginitsowngrounds.Inthelightofastreetlampweread“LaburnumVilla”uponthegate-postofoneofthem.Theoccupantshadevidentlyretiredtorest,forallwasdarksaveforafanlightoverthehalldoor,whichshedasingleblurredcircleontothegardenpath.Thewoodenfencewhichseparatedthegroundsfromtheroadthrewadenseblackshadowupontheinnerside,andhereitwasthatwecrouched.
