Once,comingaroundabend,heshiedabruptly,likeastartledhorse,curvedawayfromtheplacewherehehadbeenwalking,andretreatedseveralpacesbackalongthetrail. Thecreekheknewwasfrozencleartothebottom—nocreekcouldcontainwaterinthatarcticwinter—butheknewalsothattherewerespringsthatbubbledoutfromthehillsidesandranalongunderthesnowandontoptheiceofthecreek. Heknewthatthecoldestsnapsneverfrozethesesprings,andheknewlikewisetheirdanger. Theyweretraps. Theyhidpoolsofwaterunderthesnowthatmightbethreeinchesdeep,orthreefeet. Sometimestherewerealternatelayersofwaterandice-skin,sothatwhenonebrokethroughhekeptonbreakingthroughforawhile,sometimeswettinghimselftothewaist.

Hestoodandstudiedthecreek-bedanditsbanks,anddecidedthattheflowofwatercamefromtheright. Hereflectedawhile,rubbinghisnoseandcheeks,thenskirtedtotheleft,steppinggingerlyandtestingthefootingforeachstep. Onceclearofthedanger,hetookafreshchewoftobaccoandswungalongathisfour-milegait.
