           Thefrozenmoistureofitsbreathinghadsettledonitsfurinafinepowderoffrost,andespeciallywereitsjowls,muzzle,andeyelasheswhitenedbyitscrystalledbreath. Theman’sredbeardandmoustachewerelikewisefrosted,butmoresolidly,thedeposittakingtheformoficeandincreasingwitheverywarm,moistbreathheexhaled. Also,themanwaschewingtobacco,andthemuzzleoficeheldhislipssorigidlythathewasunabletoclearhischinwhenheexpelledthejuice. Theresultwasthatacrystalbeardofthecolourandsolidityofamberwasincreasingitslengthonhischin. Ifhefelldownitwouldshatteritself,likeglass,intobrittlefragments. Buthedidnotmindtheappendage. Itwasthepenaltyalltobacco-chewerspaidinthatcountry,andhehadbeenoutbeforeintwocoldsnaps. Theyhadnotbeensocoldasthis,heknew,butbythespiritthermometeratSixtyMileheknewtheyhadbeenregisteredatfiftybelowandatfifty-five.
