Attimeshisprogresswaslikeclamberingalongthefaceofawall,andafteratimetherisingsunceasedtostrikealongthegorge,thevoicesofthesingingbirdsdiedaway,andtheairgrewcoldanddarkabouthim. Butthedistantvalleywithitshouseswasallthebrighterforthat. Hecamepresentlytotalus,andamongtherockshenoted—forhewasanobservantman—anunfamiliarfernthatseemedtoclutchoutofthecreviceswithintensegreenhands. Hepickedafrondorsoandgnaweditsstalkandfoundithelpful.
Aboutmiddayhecameatlastoutofthethroatofthegorgeintotheplainandthesunlight. Hewasstiffandweary; hesatdownintheshadowofarock,filleduphisflaskwithwaterfromaspringanddrankitdown,andremainedforatimerestingbeforehewentontothehouses.
Theywereverystrangetohiseyes,andindeedthewholeaspectofthatvalleybecame,asheregardedit,queererandmoreunfamiliar.
