           ThecaseswereaddressedtoCharlesWardathisPawtuxetbungalow,andStateandFederalofficialsatoncepaidhimaveryforcefulandseriouscall.Theyfoundhimpallidandworriedwithhistwooddcompanions,andreceivedfromhimwhatseemedtobeavalidexplanationandevidenceofinnocence.Hehadneededcertainanatomicalspecimensaspartofaprogramofresearchwhosedepthandgenuinenessanyonewhohadknownhiminthelastdecadecouldprove,andhadorderedtherequiredkindandnumberfromagencieswhichhehadthoughtasreasonablylegitimateassuchthingscanbe.Oftheidentityofthespecimenshehadknownabsolutelynothing,andwasproperlyshockedwhentheinspectorshintedatthemonstrouseffectonpublicsentimentandnationaldignitywhichaknowledgeofthematterwouldproduce.InthisstatementhewasfirmlysustainedbyhisbeardedcolleagueDr.Allen,whoseoddlyhollowvoicecarriedevenmoreconvictionthanhisownnervoustones;sothatintheendtheofficialstooknoaction,butcarefullysetdowntheNewYorknameandaddresswhichWardgavethemabasisforasearchwhichcametonothing.Itisonlyfairtoaddthatthespecimenswerequicklyandquietlyrestoredtotheirproperplaces,andthatthegeneralpublicwillneverknowoftheirblasphemousdisturbance.

           OnFebruary9,1928,Dr.WillettreceivedaletterfromCharlesWardwhichheconsidersofextraordinaryimportance,andaboutwhichhehasfrequentlyquarreledwithDr.Lyman.
