           Youmustneverletthetrialoutofyoursight,youhavetogoandseetheappropriatejudgeatregularintervalsaswellaswhensomethinginparticularcomesupand,whateveryoudo,youhavetotryandremainfriendlywithhim;ifyoudon’tknowthejudgepersonallyyouhavetoinfluencehimthroughthejudgesyoudoknow,andyouhavetodoitwithoutgivinguponthedirectdiscussions.Aslongasyoudon’tfailtodoanyofthesethingsyoucanbereasonablysurethetrialwon’tgetpastitsfirststages.Thetrialdoesn’tstop,butthedefendantisalmostascertainofavoidingconvictionasifhe’dbeenacquitted.Comparedwithanapparentacquittal,defermenthastheadvantagethatthedefendant’sfutureislessuncertain,he’ssafefromtheshockofbeingsuddenlyre-arrestedanddoesn’tneedtofeartheexertionsandstressinvolvedingettinganapparentacquittaljustwheneverythingelseinhislifewouldmakeitmostdifficult.Defermentdoeshavecertaindisadvantagesofitsownthough,too,andtheyshouldn’tbeunder-estimated.Idon’tmeanbythisthatthedefendantisneverfree,he’sneverfreeinthepropersenseofthewordwithanapparentacquittaleither.There’sanotherdisadvantage.Proceedingscan’tbepreventedfrommovingforwardunlesstherearesomeatleastostensiblereasonsgiven.Sosomethingneedstoseemtobehappeningwhenlookedatfromtheoutside.Thismeansthatfromtimetotimevariousinjunctionshavetobeobeyed,theaccusedhastobequestioned,investigationshavetotakeplaceandsoon.
