           AshewentthroughthehallwayhelookedatthecloseddoorofMissBürstner’sroom.Butitwasn’ttherethathewasinvited,butthediningroom,towhichheyankedthedooropenwithoutknocking.

           Theroomwaslongbutnarrowwithonewindow.Therewasonlyenoughspaceavailabletoputtwocupboardsatanangleinthecornerbythedoor,andtherestoftheroomwasentirelytakenupwiththelongdiningtablewhichstartedbythedoorandreachedallthewaytothegreatwindow,whichwasthusmadealmostinaccessible.Thetablewasalreadylaidforalargenumberofpeople,asonSundaysalmostallthetenantsatetheirdinnerhereatmidday.

           WhenK.entered,MissMontagcametowardshimfromthewindowalongonesideofthetable.Theygreetedeachotherinsilence.
