MmeRieuxgotup,putasideherknittingandwentovertothebed.ForsometimenowTarrou’seyeshadbeenclosed.Thesweathadleftthehairincurlsonhishardforehead.MmeRieuxsighedandthesickmanopenedhiseyes.Hesawthekindfaceleaningtowardshimand,beneaththewavesoffever,thedoggedsmileappearedoncemore.Buttheeyesclosedagainimmediately.WhenhewasaloneRieuxtookoverthechairthathismotherhadjustleft.Thestreetwassoundlessandthesilencewasnowcomplete.Thecoldofmorninghadstartedtomakeitselffeltintheroom.
Thedoctordozedoff,butthefirstwagonofdawnrousedhim.Heshudderedand,lookingatTarrou,realizedthattherehadbeenapauseandthatthesickmanwasalsosleeping.Thewoodandironwheelsofthehorse-drawnwagoncouldbeheardfadingintothedistance.Outsidethewindow,itwasstilldark.WhenthedoctorwentovertothebedTarrouwaslookingathimwithexpressionlesseyes,asthoughstillonthesideofsleep.
"Youdidsleep,didn’tyou?"Rieuxasked.

"Areyoubreathingmoreeasily?"
"Alittle.Doesthatmeansomething?"
Rieuxpaused,thensaid:
"No,Tarrou,itdoesn’tmeananything.YouknowaboutthemorningremissionaswellasIdo."
Tarrounoddedinapproval.
"Thankyou,"hesaid."Alwaysanswermeprecisely."
