Finallytheyenteredthestadium.Thestandswerefullofpeople,andthefieldwascoveredwithseveralhundredredtentsinsidewhichonecouldsee,fromadistance,beddingandbundles.Thestandshadbeenretainedsothattheinterneescouldtakeshelterifitwashotorraining.Theywerejustobligedtogobacktotheirtentsatsunset.Underthestandsweretheshower-roomswhichhadbeenrefurbishedandtheplayers’olddressing-roomswhichhadbeentransformedintoofficesandinfirmaries.Mostoftheinterneeswereinthestands,whilesomeotherswerewanderingalongthetouchlines.Afewwerecrouchingattheentrancetotheirtentsandlookingvaguelyaroundthem.Inthestandsmanywereslumpeddown,apparentlywaitingforsomething.
"Whatdotheydoallday?"TarrouaskedRambert.

Almostallofthemwereempty-handed,withtheirarmshangingbytheirsides.Thisvastassemblageofmenwascuriouslysilent.
