Afewminuteslater,twomencameover,lookedathimwithoutanyparticularinterest,thenwentovertoleanontheparapetofthepromenade,seemingaltogetherabsorbedincontemplatingthebare,desertedquays.Bothmenwerethesameheight,eachwearingbluetrousersandadarkblue,short-sleevedpullover.Thejournalistmovedashortdistanceawayandsatdownonabenchwherehecouldkeeptheminview.Thiswaswhenhenoticedthattheycouldsurelynotbemorethantwentyyearsold.Justthen,hesawGonzaleswalkingtowardshim,apologizing.
"Hereareourfriends,"hesaid,leadinghimtowardstheyoungmenwhomheintroducedasMarcelandLouis.FromthefronttheylookedveryalikeandRambertguessedthattheymustbebrothers.
"Hereweare,"saidGonzales."Nowyouknoweachother.Wehavetomaketheactualarrangements."
MarcelandLouissaidthattheirturnatsentrydutybeganintwodaysandlastedaweek.Theywouldhavetolookoutforthemostconvenientday.FourofthemguardedtheWestGateandtheothertwomenwereprofessionalsoldiers;therewasnoquestionofinvolvingtheminthebusiness:theycouldnotbetrustedand,inanycase,itwouldputupthecost.Butoccasionallythesetwocolleagueswouldgoandspendpartofthenightintheback-roomofabarthattheyknew.SoMarcelandLouissuggestedtoRambertthatheshouldcomeandstaywiththem,nearthegates,andwaitforsomeonetocomeandfetchhim.Inthesecircumstancesthecrossingwouldbequiteeasy.
