           Sohehadtheregulatorycapability,andamodicumofimagination.Butaprofessionaldreamerrequiresadealmorethanamodicumofthelast,andthat’sadeficiencythatcan’tbecompensatedforbyadisproportionatequantityofthefirst.DallaswasnomorerealisticprodreamermaterialthanRipley.

           KanewaslesscontrolledinthoughtandactionthanwasDallas,andpossessedfarlessimagination.Hewasagoodexecutiveofficer.Neverwouldhebeacaptain.Thatrequiresacertaindrivecoupledwiththeabilitytocommandothers,neitherofwhichKanehadbeenblessedwith.Hisdreamsweretranslucent,formlessshadowscomparedtothoseofDallas,justasKanewasathinner,lessvibrantechoofthecaptain.Thatdidnotmakehimlesslikable.Butprodreamingrequiresacertainextraenergy,andKanehadbarelyenoughforday-to-dayliving.

           Parker’sdreamswerenotoffensive,buttheywerelesspastoralthanKane’s.Therewaslittleimaginationinthematall.Theyweretoospecialized,anddealtonlyrarelywithhumanthings.
