MerrywonderedhowmanyRiderstherewere.Hecouldnotguesstheirnumberinthegatheringgloom,butitlookedtohimlikeagreatarmy,manythousandsstrong.Whilehewaspeeringfromsidetosidetheking’spartycameupundertheloomingcliffontheeasternsideofthevalley;andtheresuddenlythepathbegantoclimb,andMerrylookedupinamazement.Hewasonaroadthelikeofwhichhehadneverseenbefore,agreatworkofmen’shandsinyearsbeyondthereachofsong.Upwardsitwound,coilinglikeasnake,boringitswayacrossthesheerslopeofrock.Steepasastair,itloopedbackwardsandforwardsasitclimbed.Upithorsescouldwalk,andwainscouldbeslowlyhauled;butnoenemycouldcomethatway,exceptoutoftheair,ifitwasdefendedfromabove.
