Springsurpassedhiswildesthopes.Histreesbegantosproutandgrow,asiftimewasinahurryandwishedtomakeoneyeardofortwenty.InthePartyFieldabeautifulyoungsaplingleapedup:ithadsilverbarkandlongleavesandburstintogoldenflowersinApril.Itwasindeedamallorn,anditwasthewonderoftheneighbourhood.Inafteryears,asitgrewingraceandbeauty,itwasknownfarandwideandpeoplewouldcomelongjourneystoseeit:theonlymallornwestoftheMountainsandeastoftheSea,andoneofthefinestintheworld.
Altogether1420intheShirewasamarvellousyear.Notonlywastherewonderfulsunshineanddeliciousrain,induetimesandperfectmeasure,butthereseemedsomethingmore:anairofrichnessandgrowth,andagleamofabeautybeyondthatofmortalsummersthatflickerandpassuponthisMiddle-earth.
