BeforeYulenotabrickwasleftstandingofthenewShirriff-housesorofanythingthathadbeenbuiltby"Sharkey’sMen’;butthebrickswereusedtorepairmanyanoldhole,tomakeitsnuggeranddrier.Greatstoresofgoodsandfood,andbeer,werefoundthathadbeenhiddenawaybytheruffiansinshedsandbarnsanddesertedholes,andespeciallyinthetunnelsatMichelDelvingandintheoldquarriesatScary;sothattherewasagreatdealbettercheerthatYulethananyonehadhopedfor.
OneofthefirstthingsdoneinHobbiton,beforeeventheremovalofthenewmill,wastheclearingoftheHillandBagEnd,andtherestorationofBagshotRow.Thefrontofthenewsand-pitwasalllevelledandmadeintoalargeshelteredgarden,andnewholeswereduginthesouthwardface,backintotheHill,andtheywerelinedwithbrick.TheGafferwasrestoredtoNumberThree;andhesaidoftenanddidnotcarewhoheardit:
"It’sanillwindasblowsnobodynogood,asIalwayssay.AndAll’swellasendsBetter!"
Therewassomediscussionofthenamethatthenewrowshouldbegiven.BattleGardenswasthoughtof,orBetterSmials.Butafterawhileinsensiblehobbit-fashionitwasjustcalledNewRow.ItwasapurelyBywaterjoketorefertoitasSharkey’sEnd.
Thetreesweretheworstlossanddamage,foratSharkey’sbiddingtheyhadbeencutdownrecklesslyfarandwideovertheShire;andSamgrievedoverthismorethananythingelse.
