AndtheKingsaidtoBeregond:"Beregond,byyourswordbloodwasspilledintheHallows,wherethatisforbidden.AlsoyouleftyourpostwithoutleaveofLordorofCaptain.Forthesethings,ofold,deathwasthepenalty.NowthereforeImustpronounceyourdoom.
"Allpenaltyisremittedforyourvalourinbattle,andstillmorebecauseallthatyoudidwasfortheloveoftheLordFaramir.NonethelessyoumustleavetheGuardoftheCitadel,andyoumustgoforthfromtheCityofMinasTirith."
ThenthebloodleftBeregond’sface,andhewasstrickentotheheartandbowedhishead.ButtheKingsaid:
"Soitmustbe,foryouareappointedtotheWhiteCompany,theGuardofFaramir,PrinceofIthilien,andyoushallbeitscaptainanddwellinEmynArneninhonourandpeace,andintheserviceofhimforwhomyouriskedall,tosavehimfromdeath."
AndthenBeregond,perceivingthemercyandjusticeoftheKing,wasglad,andkneelingkissedhishand,anddepartedinjoyandcontent.
