           TheQueenproppedherupagainstatree,andsaidkindly,‘Youmayrestalittlenow.

           Alicelookedroundheringreatsurprise.‘Why,Idobelievewe’vebeenunderthistreethewholetime!Everything’sjustasitwas!’

           ‘Ofcourseitis,’saidtheQueen,‘whatwouldyouhaveit?’

           ‘Well,inourcountry,’saidAlice,stillpantingalittle,‘you’dgenerallygettosomewhereelseifyouranveryfastforalongtime,aswe’vebeendoing.

           ‘Aslowsortofcountry!’saidtheQueen.‘Now,here,yousee,ittakesalltherunningyoucando,tokeepinthesameplace.Ifyouwanttogetsomewhereelse,youmustrunatleasttwiceasfastasthat!’

           ‘I’drathernottry,please!’saidAlice.‘I’mquitecontenttostayhereonlyIamsohotandthirsty!’

           ‘Iknowwhatyou’dlike!’theQueensaidgood-naturedly,takingalittleboxoutofherpocket.‘Haveabiscuit?’

           Alicethoughtitwouldnotbeciviltosay‘No,’thoughitwasn’tatallwhatshewanted.Soshetookit,andateitaswellasshecould:anditwasverydry;andshethoughtshehadneverbeensonearlychokedinallherlife.

           ‘Whileyou’rerefreshingyourself,’saidtheQueen,‘I’lljusttakethemeasurements.
