Shesometimesalludedforamomenttoherownhome,ormentionedanadventureorsituation,oranearlyrecollection,whichindicatedapeopleofstrangemanners,anddescribedcustomsofwhichweknewnothing.IgatheredfromthesechancehintsthathernativecountrywasmuchmoreremotethanIhadatfirstfancied.
Aswesatthusoneafternoonunderthetreesafuneralpassedusby.Itwasthatofaprettyyounggirl,whomIhadoftenseen,thedaughterofoneoftherangersoftheforest.Thepoormanwaswalkingbehindthecoffinofhisdarling;shewashisonlychild,andhelookedquiteheartbroken.
Peasantswalkingtwo-and-twocamebehind,theyweresingingafuneralhymn.
Irosetomarkmyrespectastheypassed,andjoinedinthehymntheywereverysweetlysinging.
