           Hedidnotrememberwhenhehadfirststartedtotalkaloudwhenhewasbyhimself. Hehadsungwhenhewasbyhimselfintheolddays andhehadsungatnightsometimeswhenhewasalonesteeringonhiswatchinthesmacksorintheturtleboats. Hehadprobablystartedtotalkaloud,whenalone,whentheboyhadleft. Buthedidnotremember. Whenheandtheboyfishedtogethertheyusuallyspokeonlywhenitwasnecessary. Theytalkedatnightorwhentheywerestorm-boundbybadweather. Itwasconsideredavirtuenottotalkunnecessarilyatseaandtheoldmanhadalwaysconsidereditsoandrespectedit. Butnowhesaidhisthoughtsaloudmanytimessincetherewasnoonethattheycouldannoy. 

           "IftheothersheardmetalkingoutloudtheywouldthinkthatIamcrazy,"hesaidaloud. "ButsinceIamnotcrazy,Idonotcare. Andtherichhaveradiostotalktothemintheirboatsandtobringthemthebaseball."

           Hecouldnotseethegreenoftheshore nowbutonlythetopsofthebluehillsthatshowedwhiteasthoughtheyweresnow-capped andthecloudsthatlookedlikehighsnowmountainsabovethem.
