           Inthedarktheoldmancouldfeelthemorningcoming andasherowedheheardthetremblingsoundasflyingfishleftthewaterandthehissingthattheirstiffsetwingsmadeastheysoaredawayinthedarkness. Hewasveryfondofflyingfishastheywerehisprincipalfriendsontheocean. Hewassorryforthebirds,especiallythesmalldelicatedarkternsthatwerealwaysflyingandlookingandalmostneverfinding,andhethought, "Thebirdshaveaharderlifethanwedoexceptfortherobberbirdsandtheheavystrongones. Whydidtheymakebirdssodelicateandfineasthoseseaswallowswhentheoceancanbesocruel? Sheiskindandverybeautiful.Butshecanbesocruelanditcomessosuddenlyandsuchbirdsthatfly, dippingandhunting,withtheirsmallsadvoicesaremadetoodelicatelyforthesea."
