           HewasasleepinashorttimeandhedreamedofAfricawhenhewasaboyandthelonggoldenbeachesandthewhitebeaches, sowhitetheyhurtyoureyes,andthehighcapesandthegreatbrownmountains. Helivedalongthatcoastnoweverynight andinhisdreamsheheardthesurfroarandsawthenativeboatscomeridingthroughit. HesmelledthetarandoakumofthedeckashesleptandhesmelledthesmellofAfricathatthelandbreezebroughtatmorning. 

           Usuallywhenhesmelledthelandbreezehewokeupanddressedtogoandwaketheboy.ButtonightthesmellofthelandbreezecameveryearlyandheknewitwastooearlyinhisdreamandwentondreamingtoseethewhitepeaksoftheIslandsrisingfromtheseaandthenhedreamedofthedifferentharboursandroadsteadsoftheCanaryIslands. 

           Henolongerdreamedofstorms, norofwomen,norofgreatoccurrences,norofgreatfish,norfights,norcontestsofstrength,norofhiswife. Heonlydreamedofplacesnowandofthelionsonthebeach. Theyplayedlikeyoungcatsintheduskandhelovedthemashelovedtheboy. Heneverdreamedabouttheboy. Hesimplywoke,lookedouttheopendooratthemoonandunrolledhistrousersandputthemon. Heurinatedoutsidetheshackandthenwentuptheroadtowaketheboy. Hewasshiveringwiththemorningcold. Butheknewhewouldshiverhimselfwarmandthatsoonhewouldberowing.
