Thentheshoutingandthestruggling,andtheonslaughtthatwasmadeonthedefencelessporter!Thescalinghimwithchairsforladderstodiveintohispockets,despoilhimofbrown-paperparcels,holdontightbyhiscravat,hughimroundhisneck,pommelhisback,andkickhislegsinirrepressibleaffection!Theshoutsofwonderanddelightwithwhichthedevelopmentofeverypackagewasreceived!Theterribleannouncementthatthebabyhadbeentakenintheactofputtingadoll’sfrying-panintohismouth,andwasmorethansuspectedofhavingswallowedafictitiousturkey,gluedonawoodenplatter!Theimmensereliefoffindingthisafalsealarm!Thejoy,andgratitude,andecstasy!Theyareallindescribablealike.Itisenoughthatbydegreesthechildrenandtheiremotionsgotoutoftheparlour,andbyonestairatatime,uptothetopofthehouse;wheretheywenttobed,andsosubsided.
