ThereekingmanreleasedtheropeandDandiliontumbledinertlytotheground,fallinginsuchawaythathecouldseethemanwiththelanternstandingatthedoorandthereekingman,alongknifeinhishand,lyinginwaitontheotherside.Lightbrokeinfromthebawdy-housethroughgapsintheplanks,andthepoetheardthesingingandhubbub.
Thedoortothepigstycreakedopenrevealingashortfigurewrappedinacloakandwearingaround,tightlyfittingcap.Afteramoment’shesitation,thewomancrossedthethreshold.Thereekingmanthrewhimselfather,slashingforcefullywithhisknife,andtumbledtohiskneesastheknifemetwithnoresistance,passingthroughthefigure’sthroatasthoughthroughacloudofsmoke.Becausethefigurereallywasacloudofsmoke–onewhichwasalreadystartingtodisperse.Butbeforeitcompletelyvanishedanotherfigureburstintothepigsty,indistinct,darkandnimbleasaweasel.Dandilionsawitthrowacloakatthelanternman,jumpoverthereekingone,sawsomethingglisteninitshand,andheardthereekingmanwheezeandchokesavagely.Thelanternmandisentangledhimselffromthecloak,jumped,tookaswingwithhisknife.
