           "‘Whatdoyouwant,littleHans?’

           "‘TheMiller’ssonhasfallenfromaladder,andhashurthimself,andtheMillerwantsyoutocomeatonce.

           "‘Allright!’saidtheDoctor;andheorderedhishorse,andhisbigboots,andhislantern,andcamedownstairs,androdeoffinthedirectionoftheMiller’shouse,littleHanstrudgingbehindhim.

           "Butthestormgrewworseandworse,andtherainfellintorrents,andlittleHanscouldnotseewherehewasgoing,orkeepupwiththehorse.Atlasthelosthisway,andwanderedoffonthemoor,whichwasaverydangerousplace,asitwasfullofdeepholes,andtherepoorlittleHanswasdrowned.Hisbodywasfoundthenextdaybysomegoatherds,floatinginagreatpoolofwater,andwasbroughtbackbythemtothecottage.

           "EverybodywenttolittleHans’funeral,ashewassopopular,andtheMillerwasthechiefmourner.

           "‘AsIwashisbestfriend,’saidtheMiller,‘itisonlyfairthatIshouldhavethebestplace;’sohewalkedattheheadoftheprocessioninalongblackcloak,andeverynowandthenhewipedhiseyeswithabigpocket-handkerchief.
