ThreedayslaterwewerebackinBakerStreettogether;butitwasevidentthatmyfriendwouldbemuchthebetterforachange,andthethoughtofaweekofspringtimeinthecountrywasfullofattractionstomealso.Myoldfriend,ColonelHayter,whohadcomeundermyprofessionalcareinAfghanistan,hadnowtakenahousenearReigateinSurreyandhadfrequentlyaskedmetocomedowntohimuponavisit.Onthelastoccasionhehadremarkedthatifmyfriendwouldonlycomewithmehewouldbegladtoextendhishospitalitytohimalso.Alittlediplomacywasneeded,butwhenHolmesunderstoodthattheestablishmentwasabachelorone,andthathewouldbeallowedthefullestfreedom,hefellinwithmyplansandaweekafterourreturnfromLyonswewereunderthecolonel’sroof.Hayterwasafineoldsoldierwhohadseenmuchoftheworld,andhesoonfound,asIhadexpected,thatHolmesandhehadmuchincommon.
Ontheeveningofourarrivalweweresittinginthecolonel’sgun-roomafterdinner,Holmesstretcheduponthesofa,whileHayterandIlookedoverhislittlearmoryofEasternweapons.
