WhenheheardthatRobinHoodhadoncemoreslippedoutofthetrap,hestayednotaminute,but,gatheringhisbandstogether,hepushedforwardtothenorthwardwithspeed,leavingordersforallthetroopsthatcametoSaintAlbanstofollowafterhimwithouttarrying.OntheeveningofthefourthdayhereachedNottinghamTown,andtherestraightwaydividedhismenintobandsofsixorseven,andsentthemallthroughthecountryside,blockingeveryhighwayandbywaytotheeastwardandthesouthwardandthewestwardofSherwood.TheSheriffofNottinghamcalledforthallhismenlikewise,andjoinedwiththeBishop,forhesawthatthiswasthebestchancethathadeverbefallenofpayingbackhisscoreinfulltoRobinHood.WillScarletandLittleJohnandAllanaDalehadjustmissedtheKing’smentotheeastward,fortheverynextdayaftertheyhadpassedthelineandenteredSherwoodtheroadsthroughwhichtheyhadtraveledwereblocked,sothat,hadtheytarriedintheirjourneying,theywouldsurelyhavefallenintotheBishop’shands.
ButofallthisRobinknewnotawhit;sohewhistledmerrilyashetrudgedalongtheroadbeyondStanton,withhisheartasfreefromcareastheyolkofaneggisfromcobwebs.Atlasthecametowherealittlestreamspreadacrosstheroadinashallowsheet,tinklingandsparklingasitfrettedoveritsbedofgoldengravel.HereRobinstopped,beingathirst,and,kneelingdown,hemadeacupofthepalmsofhishands,andbegantodrink.
