Thenpresentlytheymetthreemerryminstrels,allcladinred,whostaredamaintoseeaGrayFriarwithsuchshortrobeswalkinginthemiddleoftheroad,andtwobrotherswithheadsbowedwithshame,ridinguponrichlycaparisonedcobsonthefootpaths.Whentheyhadcomeneartotheminstrels,LittleJohnwavedhisstafflikeanusherclearingtheway."Makeway!"hecriedinaloudvoice."Makeway!makeway!Forherewego,wethree!"Thenhowtheminstrelsstared,andhowtheylaughed!ButthefatFriarshookaswithanague,andtheleanFriarbowedhisheadoverhishorse’sneck.
Thennexttheymettwonobleknightsinricharray,withhawkonwrist,andlikewisetwofairladiescladinsilksandvelvets,alla-ridingonnoblesteeds.Theseallmaderoom,staring,asLittleJohnandthetwofriarscamealongtheroad.
