           Asthushewalkedalongwithabriskstepandamerrywhistle,hecamesuddenlyuponsomeforestersseatedbeneathagreatoaktree.Fifteentherewereinall,makingthemselvesmerrywithfeastinganddrinkingastheysataroundahugepasty,towhicheachmanhelpedhimself,thrustinghishandsintothepie,andwashingdownthatwhichtheyatewithgreathornsofalewhichtheydrewallfoamingfromabarrelthatstoodnigh.EachmanwascladinLincolngreen,andafineshowtheymade,seatedupontheswardbeneaththatfair,spreadingtree.Thenoneofthem,withhismouthfull,calledouttoRobin,"Hulloa,wheregoestthou,littlelad,withthyone-pennybowandthyfarthingshafts?"

           ThenRobingrewangry,fornostriplinglikestobetauntedwithhisgreenyears.

           "Now,"quothhe,"mybowandekeminearrowsareasgoodasshine;andmoreover,IgototheshootingmatchatNottinghamTown,whichsamehasbeenproclaimedbyourgoodSheriffofNottinghamshire;thereIwillshootwithotherstoutyeomen,foraprizehasbeenofferedofafinebuttofale."

           Thenonewhoheldahornofaleinhishandsaid,"Ho!listentothelad!Why,boy,thymother’smilkisyetscarcedryuponthylips,andyetthoupratestofstandingupwithgoodstoutmenatNottinghambutts,thouwhoartscarceabletodrawonestringofatwo-stonebow."
