Thengraduallytimeawakenedagainandmovedsluggishlyon.Thehorsesstampedontheothersideofthefeedingracksandthehalterchainsclinked.Outside,themen’svoicesbecamelouderandclearer.
FromaroundtheendofthelaststalloldCandy’svoicecame.«Lennie,"hecalled.«Oh,Lennie!Youinhere?Ibeenfiguringsomemore.Tellyouwhatwecando,Lennie.»OldCandyappearedaroundtheendofthelaststall.«Oh,Lennie!»hecalledagain;andthenhestopped,andhisbodystiffened.Herubbedhissmoothwristonhiswhitestubblewhiskers.«Idi’n’tknowyouwashere,"hesaidtoCurley’swife.
Whenshedidn’tanswer,hesteppednearer.«Yououghtentosleepouthere,"hesaiddisapprovingly;andthenhewasbesideherand—«Oh,JesusChrist!»Helookedabouthelplessly,andherubbedhisbeard.Andthenhejumpedupandwentquicklyoutofthebarn.
Butthebarnwasalivenow.Thehorsesstampedandsnorted,andtheychewedthestrawoftheirbeddingandtheyclashedthechainsoftheirhalters.InamomentCandycameback,andGeorgewaswithhim.
