           Tneendofthegreatbarnwaspiledhighwithnewhayandoverthepilehungthefour-talonedJacksonforksuspendedfromitspulley.Thehaycamedownlikeamountainslopetotheotherendofthebarn,andtherewasalevelplaceasyetunfilledwiththenewcrop.Atthesidesthefeedingrackswerevisible,andbetweentheslatstheheadsofhorsescouldbeseen.

           ItwasSundayafternoon.Therestinghorsesnibbledtheremainingwispsofhay,andtheystampedtheirfeetandtheybitthewoodofthemangersandrattledthehalterchains.Theafternoonsunslicedinthroughthecracksofthebarnwallsandlayinbrightlinesonthehay.Therewasthebuzzoffliesintheair,thelazyafternoonhumming.

           Fromoutsidecametheclangofhorseshoesontheplayingpegandtheshoutsofmen,playing,encouraging,jeering.Butinthebarnitwasquietandhummingandlazyandwarm.
