           Candydidnotanswer.Thesilencefellontheroomagain.Itcameoutofthenightandinvadedtheroom.Georgesaid,«Anybodyliketoplayalittleeuchre?»

           Theytookplacesoppositeeachotheratthetableunderthelight,butGeorgedidnotshufflethecards.Herippledtheedgeofthedecknervously,andthelittlesnappingnoisedrewtheeyesofallthemenintheroom,sothathestoppeddoingit.Thesilencefellontheroomagain.Aminutepassed,andanotherminute.Candylaystill,staringattheceiling.Slimgazedathimforamomentandthenlookeddownathishands;hesubduedonehandwiththeother,andhelditdown.Therecamealittlegnawingsoundfromunderthefloorandallthemenlookeddowntowarditgratefully.OnlyCandycontinuedtostareattheceiling.
