           Awatersnakeglidedsmoothlyupthepool,twistingitsperiscopeheadfromsidetoside;anditswamthelengthofthepoolandcametothelegsofamotionlessheronthatstoodintheshallows.Asilentheadandbeaklanceddownandpluckeditoutbythehead,andthebeakswallowedthelittlesnakewhileitstailwavedfrantically.

           Afarrushofwindsoundedandagustdrovethroughthetopsofthetreeslikeawave.Thesycamoreleavesturneduptheirsilversides,thebrown,dryleavesonthegroundscuddedafewfeet.Androwonrowoftinywindwavesflowedupthepool’sgreensurface.

           Asquicklyasithadcome,thewinddied,andtheclearingwasquietagain.Theheronstoodintheshallows,motionlessandwaiting.Anotherlittlewatersnakeswamupthepool,turningitsperiscopeheadfromsidetoside.

           SuddenlyLennieappearedoutofthebrush,andhecameassilentlyasacreepingbearmoves.
