Onthesandybankunderthetreestheleavesliedeepandsocrispthatalizardmakesagreatskitteringifherunsamongthem. Rabbitscomeoutofthebrushtositonthesandintheevening,andthedampflatsarecoveredwiththenighttracksof‘coons,andwiththespreadpadsofdogsfromtheranches,andwiththesplit-wedgetracksofdeerthatcometodrinkinthedark.
Thereisapaththroughthewillowsandamongthesycamores,apathbeatenhardbyboyscomingdownfromtheranchestoswiminthedeeppool,andbeatenhardbytrampswhocomewearilydownfromthehighwayintheeveningtojungle-upnearwater. Infrontofthelowhorizontallimbofagiantsycamorethereisanashpilemadebymanyfires; thelimbiswornsmoothbymenwhohavesatonit.
Eveningofahotdaystartedthelittlewindtomovingamongtheleaves. Theshadeclimbedupthehillstowardthetop. Onthesandbankstherabbitssatasquietlyaslittlegraysculpturedstones. Andthenfromthedirectionofthestatehighwaycamethesoundoffootstepsoncrispsycamoreleaves. Therabbitshurriednoiselesslyforcover. Astiltedheronlaboredupintotheairandpoundeddownriver. Foramomenttheplacewaslifeless,andthentwomenemergedfromthepathandcameintotheopeningbythegreenpool.
