           Butthethreedays’restwasgoodinspiteofitall,forithadgivenmykneetheverychanceitneeded.Itfeltmuchbetter,theswellinghadmateriallydecreased,andthecapseemeddescendingintoitsproperplace.Also,thethreedays’restbroughtthetroubleIhadforeseen.ItwasplainlyThomasMugridge’sintentiontomakemepayforthosethreedays.Hetreatedmevilely,cursedmecontinually,andheapedhisownworkuponme.Heevenventuredtoraisehisfisttome,butIwasbecominganimal-likemyself,andIsnarledinhisfacesoterriblythatitmusthavefrightenedhimback.ItisnopleasantpictureIcanconjureupofmyself,HumphreyVanWeyden,inthatnoisomeship’sgalley,crouchedinacornerovermytask,myfaceraisedtothefaceofthecreatureabouttostrikeme,mylipsliftedandsnarlinglikeadog’s,myeyesgleamingwithfearandhelplessnessandthecouragethatcomesoffearandhelplessness.Idonotlikethepicture.
