           AsIstoodthere,hesitant,Iheardhercrysoftly:

           "Oh,Humphrey,Iamlost."

           Ifoundherfumblingatthewalloftheafterbulkhead,and,halfleadingher,halfcarryingher,Itookherupthecompanion-way.Thepureairwaslikenectar.Maudwasonlyfaintanddizzy,andIleftherlyingonthedeckwhenItookmysecondplungebelow.

           ThesourceofthesmokemustbeveryclosetoWolfLarsenmymindwasmadeuptothis,andIwentstraighttohisbunk.AsIfeltaboutamonghisblankets,somethinghotfellonthebackofmyhand.Itburnedme,andIjerkedmyhandaway.ThenIunderstood.Throughthecracksinthebottomoftheupperbunkhehadsetfiretothemattress.Hestillretainedsufficientuseofhisleftarmtodothis.Thedampstrawofthemattress,firedfrombeneathanddeniedair,hadbeensmoulderingallthewhile.

           AsIdraggedthemattressoutofthebunkitseemedtodisintegrateinmid-air,atthesametimeburstingintoflames.Ibeatouttheburningremnantsofstrawinthebunk,thenmadeadashforthedeckforfreshair.

           Severalbucketsofwatersufficedtoputouttheburningmattressinthemiddleofthesteeragefloor;andtenminuteslater,whenthesmokehadfairlycleared,IallowedMaudtocomebelow.WolfLarsenwasunconscious,butitwasamatterofminutesforthefreshairtorestorehim.Wewereworkingoverhim,however,whenhesignedforpaperandpencil.
