Wehavewalkedformanydays.Theforesthasnoend,andweseeknoend.ButeachdayaddedtothechainofdaysbetweenusandtheCityislikeanaddedblessing.
Wehavemadeabowandmanyarrows.Wecankillmorebirdsthanweneedforourfood;wefindwaterandfruitintheforest.Atnight,wechooseaclearing,andwebuildaringoffiresaroundit.Wesleepinthemidstofthatring,andthebeastsdarenotattackus.Wecanseetheireyes,greenandyellowascoals,watchingusfromthetreebranchesbeyond.Thefiressmoulderasacrownofjewelsaroundus,andsmokestandsstillintheair,incolumnsmadebluebythemoonlight.Wesleeptogetherinthemidstofthering,thearmsoftheGoldenOnearoundus,theirheaduponourbreast.
Someday,weshallstopandbuildahouse,whenweshallhavegonefarenough.Butwedonothavetohasten.Thedaysbeforeusarewithoutend,liketheforest.
Wecannotunderstandthisnewlifewhichwehavefound,yetitseemssoclearandsosimple.Whenquestionscometopuzzleus,wewalkfaster,thenturnandforgetallthingsaswewatchtheGoldenOnefollowing.Theshadowsofleavesfallupontheirarms,astheyspreadthebranchesapart,buttheirshouldersareinthesun.Theskinoftheirarmsislikeabluemist,buttheirshouldersarewhiteandglowing,asifthelightfellnotfromabove,butrosefromundertheirskin.Wewatchtheleafwhichhasfallenupontheirshoulder,anditliesatthecurveoftheirneck,andadropofdewglistensuponitlikeajewel.
