Thetreespartedbeforeus,callingusforward.Theforestseemedtowelcomeus.Wewenton,withoutthought,withoutcare,withnothingtofeelsavethesongofourbody.
Westoppedwhenwefelthunger.Wesawbirdsinthetreebranches,andflyingfromunderourfootsteps.Wepickedastoneandwesentitasanarrowatabird.Itfellbeforeus.Wemadeafire,wecookedthebird,andweateit,andnomealhadevertastedbettertous.Andwethoughtsuddenlythattherewasagreatsatisfactiontobefoundinthefoodwhichweneedandobtainbyourownhand.Andwewishedtobehungryagainandsoon,thatwemightknowagainthisstrangenewprideineating.
Thenwewalkedon.Andwecametoastreamwhichlayasastreakofglassamongthetrees.Itlaysostillthatwesawnowaterbutonlyacutintheearth,inwhichthetreesgrewdown,upturned,andtheskylayatthebottom.Wekneltbythestreamandwebentdowntodrink.Andthenwestopped.For,upontheblueoftheskybelowus,wesawourownfaceforthefirsttime.
Wesatstillandweheldourbreath.Forourfaceandourbodywerebeautiful.Ourfacewasnotlikethefacesofourbrothers,forwefeltnotpitywhenlookinguponit.Ourbodywasnotlikethebodiesofourbrothers,forourlimbswerestraightandthinandhardandstrong.Andwethoughtthatwecouldtrustthisbeingwholookeduponusfromthestream,andthatwehadnothingtofearwiththisbeing.
Wewalkedontillthesunhadset.Whentheshadowsgatheredamongthetrees,westoppedinahollowbetweentheroots,whereweshallsleeptonight
