Thenweknewnothing.
Weopenedoureyes,lyingonourstomachonthebrickfloorofacell.Welookedupontwohandslyingfarbeforeusonthebricks,andwemovedthem,andweknewthattheywereourhands.Butwecouldnotmoveourbody.Thenwesmiled,forwethoughtofthelightandthatwehadnotbetrayedit.
Welayinourcellformanydays.Thedooropenedtwiceeachday,onceforthemenwhobroughtusbreadandwater,andoncefortheJudges.ManyJudgescametoourcell,firstthehumblestandthenthemosthonoredJudgesoftheCity.Theystoodbeforeusintheirwhitetogas,andtheyasked:
“Areyoureadytospeak?”
Butweshookourhead,lyingbeforethemonthefloor.Andtheydeparted.
Wecountedeachdayandeachnightasitpassed.Then,tonight,weknewthatwemustescape.FortomorrowtheWorldCouncilofScholarsistomeetinourCity.
