Gregormadearunforhim;hewantedtobesureofreachinghim;thechiefclerkmusthaveexpectedsomething,asheleaptdownseveralstepsatonceanddisappeared;hisshoutsresoundingallaroundthestaircase.Theflightofthechiefclerkseemed,unfortunately,toputGregor’sfatherintoapanicaswell.Untilthenhehadbeenrelativelyselfcontrolled,butnow,insteadofrunningafterthechiefclerkhimself,oratleastnotimpedingGregorasheranafterhim,Gregor’sfatherseizedthechiefclerk’sstickinhisrighthand(thechiefclerkhadleftitbehindonachair,alongwithhishatandovercoat),pickedupalargenewspaperfromthetablewithhisleft,andusedthemtodriveGregorbackintohisroom,stampinghisfootathimashewent.Gregor’sappealstohisfatherwereofnohelp,hisappealsweresimplynotunderstood,howevermuchhehumblyturnedhisheadhisfathermerelystampedhisfootalltheharder.Acrosstheroom,despitethechillyweather,Gregor’smotherhadpulledopenawindow,leantfaroutofitandpressedherhandstoherface.Astrongdraughtofairflewinfromthestreettowardsthestairway,thecurtainsflewup,thenewspapersonthetableflutteredandsomeofthemwereblownontothefloor.NothingwouldstopGregor’sfatherashedrovehimback,makinghissingnoisesathimlikeawildman.Gregorhadneverhadanypracticeinmovingbackwardsandwasonlyabletogoveryslowly.
