Gregorrealisedthatitwasoutofthequestiontoletthechiefclerkgoawayinthismoodifhispositioninthefirmwasnottobeputintoextremedanger.Thatwassomethinghisparentsdidnotunderstandverywell;overtheyears,theyhadbecomeconvincedthatthisjobwouldprovideforGregorforhisentirelife,andbesides,theyhadsomuchtoworryaboutatpresentthattheyhadlostsightofanythoughtforthefuture.Gregor,though,didthinkaboutthefuture.Thechiefclerkhadtobeheldback,calmeddown,convincedandfinallywonover;thefutureofGregorandhisfamilydependedonit!Ifonlyhissisterwerehere!Shewasclever;shewasalreadyintearswhileGregorwasstilllyingpeacefullyonhisback.Andthechiefclerkwasaloverofwomen,surelyshecouldpersuadehim;shewouldclosethefrontdoorintheentrancehallandtalkhimoutofhisshockedstate.Buthissisterwasnotthere,Gregorwouldhavetodothejobhimself.Andwithoutconsideringthathestillwasnotfamiliarwithhowwellhecouldmoveaboutinhispresentstate,orthathisspeechstillmightnot—orprobablywouldnot—beunderstood,heletgoofthedoor;pushedhimselfthroughtheopening;triedtoreachthechiefclerkonthelandingwho,ridiculously,washoldingontothebanisterwithbothhands;butGregorfellimmediatelyoverand,withalittlescreamashesoughtsomethingtoholdonto,landedonhisnumerouslittlelegs.
